Samsung’s ML-1640 must be pretty close to the limits on low budget criteria and usability. Designed as a personal printer for home use, it’s about as useful as a printer can get. The “black box” is about the size of a medium size breadmaker and when it is closed, it takes up very little room. To print you need to unfold the output paper support from its top surface and fold down the front flap, which becomes the paper feed tray. This can take up to 150 sheets of 75g/sm paper. If you want to leave the printer ready to print, you will have to leave the tray open, without a paper cover to protect it from possible dust. Most entrylevel printers include a detachable cover.

Samsung provides a combined drum and toner cartridge with the ML-1640 and this includes a long, articulated handle, with which you manipulate the cartridge to the back of the printer, inside the case. It’s important to press it firmly in on the left-hand side, or the machine reports a lack of cartridge. A standard cartridge for the machine has toner for 1,500 pages but, like many other suppliers, Samsung provides a starter cartridge in the box - this one runs for just 700 pages. Providing starter cartridges is more excusable in inexpensive machines such as this, but Samsung should make the toner capacity plainer on the box.

Quality of printed material, regardless if it is text, graphics or images, is quite well. There are some hardly noticeable lines on printed material when higher resolutions are used, but these defects are more a result of thorough search for faults than true defect that average user will ever notice. It seems that after all analysis and testing, ML-1640 turned out as solid product that is worthy of attention of users that need cheap device for small printing jobs that don’t expect fast printing speeds and top quality printing results.

On the other hand, this product like all other devices from the same category should be avoided for printing jobs on monthly basis. In case of Samsung ML-1640 one page will cost you about 3 euro-cents when you start using standard cartridge. If we assume that you print 7 pages per day for 6 months period, you will spend one starter and one standard cartridge which will cost you around 125€.

Form Autofill: Filling out your information in forms over and over again can be tedious. Form autofill helps by showing information you’ve previously entered into the same form fields automatically. If at any point you want to clear out your information, that’s easy to do from the Tools menu.

And here are some improvements that aren’t immediately visible, but will make web browsing with Google Chrome more enjoyable:

Google is referring to this as Chrome 2, but that’s mainly a metric to help them keep track of changes internally they say. They will continue to roll out useful updates as often as possible.

The long-expected update to the Android operating system, version 1.5, has arrived. There’s plenty to be excited about in the 1.5 release.

The final release of the Android 1.5 OS, previously known as “Cupcake,” finally brings an on-screen virtual keyboard with vibration feedback, plus video recording, playback, and sharing via YouTube.
Cupcake also brings many user interface refinements, along with accelerometer-based application rotations. The home screen now features widgets as well; some of the bundled ones include a calendar, an analog clock, music player, and search (with improved voice search).

G1’s browser is up for a treat also, with new copy and paste, search within a page, tabbed bookmarks, and history features. Wireless music fans will appreciate their G1 even more with A2DP stereo Bluetooth support while auto-pairing was added with an improved hands-free experience.

Gmail on the G1 gets upgraded with batch editing functionality for archives, labels, and deleting. The contacts app will now show user pictures for your favorites and specific date and time stamps for events in the call log.

Google has put up a presentation video of the Android 1.5 release. It’s worth noting that the engineer showcases the new Android 1.5 features on the G2 (HTC Magic), which is available only in Europe at the moment on Vodafone. The European G2 doesn’t have a physical keyboard and comes with a 3.2-megapixel camera - same as the G1.

With the Android 1.5 release, Google has caught up with the features expected to come from its main rivals this summer - the iPhone 3.0 update and Palm’s WebOS. All in all, it’s nice to see that Google approached the same strategy as Apple when it comes to upgrading a phone’s features without making the hardware obsolete.
